Among family and friends, 407 bachelor’s candidates crossed the stage to receive their degrees on Saturday, May 18, during McDaniel College’s 154th Commencement ceremony. Higher education leader Freeman A. Hrabowski III addressed the graduating class encouraging them to never stop learning and to be confident in who they are, and an Honorary Doctor of Public Service was awarded to local business leader and philanthropist Greg W. Kahlert.
History and Biology double major Zachary E. Brown was honored with The Edith Farr Ridington Writing Award for writing the best senior paper. Five undergraduates were tied for the highest cumulative GPA and were recipients of the Argonaut Award: Haley E. Arnold, Kendall Rose Catlin, Signé T. Kula, Brenna R. Mayberry, and Ariana Kaylin Stormont.
On the eve of their graduation, McDaniel College seniors in the Class of 2024 were honored with academic, activity, and leadership awards. Prior to the event, the graduating seniors took part in the Arch Processional led by McDaniel College leadership, including President Julia Jasken, Provost Flavius Lilly, and Dean of Student Liz Towle.
Tyra N. Pritchett, a Psychology major with a minor in Theatre Arts, received The Mary Ward Lewis Prize, while Kramoh T. Mansalay, a Biomedical Science major and Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies major with a Linguistic specialization, with minors in Biology and Chemistry, was awarded The Bates Prize. Both represent outstanding members of the graduating class.
All 703 of them. A diverse group, they have 35 different undergraduate majors and are from 16 graduate programs. They traveled from 27 countries and 27 states, plus Washington, D.C. McDaniel College celebrates its 154th Commencement for the Class of 2024 on Saturday, May 18. The graduate ceremony begins at 10 a.m., followed by the undergraduate ceremony at 2 p.m. Both ceremonies take place in the college’s Gill Center. A live stream of both ceremonies will also be available online at mcdaniel.edu/commencement.
McDaniel’s Class of 2024 is resilient, bold, and excited to connect. They don’t let any opportunity pass them by, and when they dive into something, they truly make it their own.
Six incoming Class of 2028 students are the college’s newest Dorsey Scholars. The Dorsey Scholars Program is the highest academic honor at McDaniel and includes full tuition, room, and board for all four years.
McDaniel College selects students into the Global Fellows and National Security Fellows programs. Global Fellows is an academic and co-curricular opportunity that empowers students to explore the world and create a global portfolio while the National Security Fellows Program provides McDaniel students with robust knowledge, skills, and experience in national security.
Five History seniors were invited to present at the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference held April 6. Senior History major Zach Paugh won second prize for his paper titled "John F. Kennedy’s Leadership: A Diplomatic Prevention of Nuclear War," which marked the 12th time since 2007 that a McDaniel student has won a prize at the conference.
