Graduating Cinema majors showcase original films at annual Cinema Showcase

Six senior Cinema majors are premiering original student-produced digital features during the McDaniel Cinema Showcase on May 9 at 7 p.m. in Decker Auditorium, Lewis Hall of Science. Admission is free and open to the public.

The McDaniel Cinema Showcase features capstone films written, directed, produced and edited by Cinema majors at McDaniel as portfolios of their work. Each film is approximately 20–30 minutes in length.

2019 Cinema Showcase films:

• “Rift” (fiction comedy-drama) by Greysen Brockbank, a senior Cinema major from Vineyard Utah.

Description: A young man collides with virtual reality. Can he balance the the real world with VR? Or will he lose himself?

• “980” (documentary) by Adelaide Fischer, a senior Cinema major from Virginia Beach, Va.

Description: Virginia State trooper Jessica Cheney was killed in January 1998 while responding to an accident on Route 1 outside Fredericksburg, Va., leaving family, friends, and co-workers to deal with this traumatic loss. Her memory lives on in the Virginia State Police and in the minds of all who knew her.

• “Escape to Another World” (documentary) by Craig Grunewald, a senior Cinema major from Silver Spring, Md.

Description: A deep dive into millennial video game culture. Who plays and why?

• “Penn's New Voice” (fiction comedy-fantasy) by Benjamin McKay, a senior Cinema major from Rockville, Md.

Description: A shy guy named Penn makes a deal with a demon to be more outgoing. When it backfires and the demon starts using Penn as a mouthpiece, the introverted artist must find a way to break the deal.

• “Taken for Granted" (fiction comedy-crime) by Sam Shoemaker, a senior Cinema major from Frederick, Md.

Description: Nathen Chen loses a prestigious national grant to a rival student, then finds himself accidentally holding this student hostage.

• “Twice Exceptional” (documentary) by Rachel Zanoni, a senior Cinema and Theatre Arts major from Marion, Iowa.

Description: Zanoni explores her journey through a public school's individualized education plan (IEP), and the toll it took on her family, her advocates, and herself.
