Transferring as a Student-Athlete From Division I to Division III

Ben Stapleton '20 started out playing football at a Division I school, but something was missing. When he transferred to McDaniel College, he found family on and off the football field.

McDaniel is a transfer-friendly school, with block transfer and dual admissions with Carroll Community College.

Essential to the Game

Every Green Terror receives the empathy, respect, and support they need to succeed. Our goal is holistic wellness, and every McDaniel student-athlete benefits from the following resources:

Winning is about more than just sport.

That’s why our varsity head coaches are considered educators and work to support the college’s academic mission.

Faculty Care

McDaniel’s Athletics Faculty Mentor Program pairs a sports team with a faculty member who cheers you on and provides advice when you need it. This guarantees close ties between athletics and academic development at the college, so that grit and resilience are in everything we do.

Your Network

Green Terror blood runs deep, and the loyal connections you make on the Hill will last a lifetime. Alums return annually for alumni games and networking opportunities with current players, giving you the competitive edge when it comes to landing your first (or next) career opportunity.

Top Tailgating in the Nation

No one does tailgating like McDaniel, and that’s been true for more than a century. We have a national reputation for our one-of-a-kind drive-in gamedays at Kenneth R. Gill Stadium.

  • The Weather Channel named McDaniel the No. 6 tailgating school in the nation. Our famous drive-in stadium and passionate fans put McDaniel among six Division I universities in the “Top Tailgaters” show, the only non-Division I school recognized.
  • Southern Living magazine named McDaniel one of the top 20 tailgaters in the U.S.
  • The Daily Meal named McDaniel a Best College Tailgate. McDaniel ranks at No. 8 and is the only non-Division I school to make the list.

All students join the tradition by making the most of gameday — attendance is free for students and community members. And Greek organizations have a long history of painting the grass bowl around the stadium, competing for recognition of “Best Letters on the Hill,” awarded annually at Homecoming.

Green Terror at football game

You might be wondering... What is a Green Terror?

The Green Terror first appeared in the Oct. 15, 1923, edition of the Western Maryland Monthly. The article recounts a football game between McDaniel (known as Western Maryland College at the time) and Washington and Lee in Lexington, Virginia. Although McDaniel lost by a 19-7 margin, the 11 players fielded that day were called “green terrors.”

The name has come to represent the spirit of the McDaniel community both on and off the athletic field. The Green Terror reigns as the symbol of the deep-rooted commitment to excellence and perseverance found on the Hill.

The 2024 men's soccer team spent eight days in Costa Rica with stops in San Jose, Dominical, Ventanas Beach, El Silencio, and Nauyaca Falls.

The Green Terror participated in two international friendly matches and activities like white water rafting, ziplining, and cultural tours.

Senior Nick Lewis blogged about the experience: "Overall, this was the trip of the lifetime with the friends of a lifetime. I know I'll never forget the experiences. 10/10," he wrote.
