McDaniel College hosts events in February in honor of Black History Month, including a Black History Month Lunchtime Movie Series, Black Business Expo, and Black History Month Convocation. These events are free and open to the public.

Honoring Black History Month, McDaniel College

Black History Month events organized by McDaniel’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion include a Black History Month Lunchtime Movie Series, Black Business Expo, and Black History Month Convocation.

McDaniel College hosts several events in February in honor of Black History Month. Organized by McDaniel’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the events are free and open to the public.

The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at McDaniel promotes and facilitates programming that supports the college’s diverse student population, including such topics as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, socio-economic status, physical ability and religion.

Black History Month Lunchtime Movie Series 

Thursdays throughout February: Feb. 2, 9, 16, and 23, at 11 a.m. in Decker Auditorium, Lewis Hall of Science

Movie series showcasing films that paved the way for Black athletes, including:

• Feb. 2: “The Gabby Douglas Story” (2014, 86 min., not rated) 

The Gabby Douglas Story

A biographical movie about two-time Olympic gold medalist gymnast Gabrielle Douglas. Douglas is the first African American to win the individual all-around gold and the first American to win gold in both the individual all-around and team competitions at the same Olympics.

• Feb. 9: “Queen of Katwe” (2016, 124 min., PG)

The true story of a young Ugandan girl whose life changes forever when she discovers she has an amazing talent for chess.

• Feb. 16: “Till” (2022, 130 min., PG)

Based on the true story of Mamie Till-Bradley, an educator and activist who pursued justice after the murder of her 14-year-old son Emmett in 1955.

• Feb. 23: “The Woman King” (2022, 134 min., PG-13)

An American historical action drama about the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s.

Tuesday, Feb. 7, 3-6 p.m., in Mid-level, Roj Student Center 

This event highlights Black-owned businesses, including those in Carroll County and McDaniel student run.

Maia Chaka

Black History Month Convocation

Tuesday, Feb. 28, 6 p.m., in Naganna Forum, Roj Student Center

This signature event features Maia Chaka, the NFL’s first Black woman referee. Founded by President Julia Jasken in 2022, this annual event takes place during Black History Month to provide an opportunity to hear from prominent individuals working towards social justice and racial equity.
