Nine McDaniel College students traveled to Washington, D.C., to attend the 2019 League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Emerge Latino Conference held February 12–14.

This is the third year that McDaniel students who are involved with the college’s LULAC student organization attended the conference as a delegation since it was founded on campus in 2016 by Flor Chavez-Cruz, a current senior at McDaniel from Falls Church, Va.

McDaniel is the only college or university in Maryland to have a LULAC chapter on campus.

The LULAC Emerge Latino Conference is a multi-day Latino leadership conference that provides college students and young professionals with public policy briefings on issues that impact the Latino community. The students also met with members of Congress to advocate on key issues affecting Latinos living in the United States and Puerto Rico.

In addition to Chavez-Cruz, the other students were seniors Kimberly Hernandez of Silver Spring, Md., Dimitri Lezcano of Randallstown, Md., and Kathalyn Urquizo of Germantown, Md., junior Takiel Gibson of Essex, Md., sophomores Yelli Coulibaly of Silver Spring, Md., Jordan Riddleberger Stockton, Md., and Abby Vidals Columbia, Md., and freshman Elva Joya of Rockville, Md.
