McDaniel Weekly - November 3, 2020

I just ran across this quote from the poet Seamus Heaney and appreciated it: “Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for.” May it be--whatever our beliefs, let us work together towards that good.

Hope Graphic

From Josh Ambrose, Associate Dean of Campus and Community Engagement

Hi McDaniel! I just ran across this quote from the poet Seamus Heaney and appreciated it: “Hope is not optimism, which expects things to turn out well, but something rooted in the conviction that there is good worth working for.” May it be--whatever our beliefs, let us work together towards that good.

In that spirit, want to debrief about the election? Members of the McDaniel Election Project (representing a broad range of departments and offices) will be in-person at the Roj student center from 11-4pm tomorrow, Wednesday, November 4th. Whether you want to talk, or just want someone to sit with, stop by near the welcome desk--we want to connect!

Off-campus? Busy class schedule throughout the day? Click here to join a virtual post-election chat tomorrow evening, Wednesday from 7-9pm, hosted by the History Department, the library, and others. Passcode: 465103.

In other news, next weekend’s weather is looking gorgeous! Join OSE near the Caboose at the stadium for our own Fall Fun Fest next Saturday, November 7, from 5-9pm. Come by for FREE food trucks, exciting Bubble Soccer matches, and the last outdoor movie of the semester! Oh, and we will also be giving away fleece blankets to moviegoers.

And before I forget, check out some of the AWESOME costumes on display at our Halloween bash on Saturday here: https://www.instagram.com/mcdaniel_ose/

Stay safe, stay connected, stay hopeful,

Celebrate Native American Heritage Month

November marks the annual observance of Native American Heritage Month. Over the course of the month, ODEI will host various programs that allow the McDaniel Community to celebrate the various traditions, cultures, and historical contributions of our Native people, send out educational facts through campus announcements, and host IG trivia every Wednesday focused on American Indian and Alaska Native topics. For more information, email Jose Moreno (jmoreno@mcdaniel.edu), Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Spread holiday cheer with the Boys and Girls Club members

While we can’t host our annual holiday party with the Boys and Girls Club of Westminster, we are still celebrating from afar! Student orgs are invited to participate in the holiday Tiktok competition (ask your org’s President for more info), we’re collecting donations so that all the kids receive a hooded shirt, and we’re sending personalized holiday cards to all the kids (stay tuned for info about a socially distanced card making party). For more information, email Katherine Taylor (kataylor@mcdaniel.edu), Associate Director of Community Engagement.

Share a positive memory about a professor

Calling all Juniors & Seniors! Please take a moment to fill out this quick survey (only 3 questions) about a professor, class, or lecture that has positively impacted you throughout your time at McDaniel. Your responses will help us pick the best lessons to showcase for some incoming first years, so make sure it’s a good one!

Also--totally unrelated to the photo contest--but if you’re the first student to email Amanda Gelber (agelber@mcdaniel.edu) the word “gourd”, you’ll get a free blanket.
