President Casey re-elected chair of Maryland Independent College and University Association
McDaniel College President Roger N. Casey has been unanimously re-elected as chair of the Board of Trustees of the Maryland Independent College and University Association (MICUA). His second two-year term begins July 1.
“Dr. Casey is a remarkably effective leader,” MICUA President Tina Bjarekull said. “He is engaged, astute, and committed. During these uncertain times, the Board voted for steady, proven leadership.”
In addition to his leadership of MICUA, President Casey is a member of the Board of Directors of and sits on the Student Financial-Aid Committee of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU). He also serves on a Steering Committee for the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC).
During his tenure as the ninth President of McDaniel College in Westminster, Maryland, and Budapest, Hungary, McDaniel has been rated highly by U.S. News, Money, and Colleges That Change Lives; named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll; and commended by The New America Foundation for supporting low-income students.
President Casey has spearheaded the creation of the Center for Experience and Opportunity (CEO), a single office comprehensively supporting experiential learning; Global Fellows, a program allowing students to internationalize any major; The Encompass Distinction, a multidisciplinary entrepreneurship curriculum; and Educator's Legacy, a guaranteed $25K/year scholarship for any child of K-12 employees or one of the inaugural community college partners.
A Phi Beta Kappan and first-generation college graduate, he holds an M.A. and a Ph.D. in English from Florida State University and a B.A. from Furman University in his native South Carolina.
MICUA is a member-driven organization devoted to serving the interests of independent higher education and supporting the work of campus leaders throughout Maryland. Established in 1971, the Association provides services to meet the needs of independent higher educations and fosters cooperative efforts among its member institutions and all segments of higher education. As the voice of independent higher education in Maryland, MICUA seeks to inform the broader public about its member institutions and the vital importance of independent colleges and universities to the future of our State and nation.
