Rising 11th and 12th grade students are invited to apply to attend a free Summer Engineering Institute at McDaniel College to be held summer 2025.

The McDaniel Summer Engineering Institute is a two-week commuter program that provides the opportunity to explore the engineering field while earning college credit

Led by McDaniel Assistant Professor of Physics and Engineering Farzad Ahmadi, students in the program participate in hands-on experiences, including conducting experiments with McDaniel Physics faculty members using specialized equipment in a college lab and networking with local engineering professionals. Various engineering concepts from fluid dynamics and thermodynamics to lighting and sensors will be covered to introduce students to a wide variety of fields in engineering, such as mechanical, civil, and electrical.

The program is open to any student who attends a public, private, or homeschool, with those from underrepresented groups in the engineering field, including racial minorities, such as Black, Hispanic, and Native American, and females, as well as those who would be the first in their family to attend college, encouraged to apply.

Students can choose from two separate two-week sessions: Session I from Monday, June 23 - Thursday, July 3, (no session on Friday, July 4), or Session II from Monday, July 7 - Friday, July 18. Both take place on weekdays from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Funding for the program is supported by a grant from the Maryland Higher Education Commission. While there is no cost for the program, students must commit to attending every day of the two-week program and travel arrangements to and from McDaniel’s campus are the responsibility of the students and their families; no housing is provided. The program is limited to 20 students per session.

The application deadline for the program is April 15 and includes the option to submit a five-to-10-minute video.
