    Students make a difference through McDaniel’s Student-Faculty Collaborative Summer Research Program

    McDaniel College students strive to make a difference in the world through the Student-Faculty Collaborative Summer Research Program. Students are learning how to solve real-world problems, whether it’s restoring local wetlands that are under threat worldwide or joining in research efforts to discover drugs to treat COVID-19 following the global pandemic. The Student-Faculty Collaborative Summer Research experience is an eight-week program for undergraduate students at McDaniel to pursue research, which is supported by donors.

    McDaniel College welcomes 10th President, Dr. Julia Jasken

    Dr. Julia Jasken becomes McDaniel College’s 10th president on June 1, 2021. She has dedicated nearly her entire professional life to higher education and most notably to McDaniel, beginning in the classroom in 2003 as an English professor. Dr. Jasken has served in various administrative roles at the college, most recently as executive vice president and provost, overseeing academic and student life.

    McDaniel junior awarded Gilman Scholarship to study abroad through virtual French immersion program

    McDaniel College junior Khadijatou Diop hopes to become a more versatile French teacher after earning a $5,000 Gilman Scholarship to study abroad through the virtual French immersion program at Université Laval in Canada. Diop, a French major with a minor in Secondary Education from Columbia, Md., was one of 2,386 undergraduate students from across the nation selected to participate in the prestigious United States Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship Program.

    Heidi Snyder Reigel ’97 named associate vice president for alumni and admissions

    McDaniel College announces Heidi Snyder Reigel ’97 as the associate vice president for alumni and admissions. In her new role, Reigel oversees the college’s alumni engagement efforts in addition to continuing to provide oversight to admissions.

    McDaniel College’s Student-Faculty Collaborative Summer Research Program leads to impactful virtual experiences

    More than 40 students participated in McDaniel College’s Student-Faculty Collaborative Summer Research Program. The Student-Faculty Collaborative Research experience is a 10-week program for undergraduate students at McDaniel to pursue research, which is supported by donors. Thirteen faculty members have been leading projects virtually, while two Chemistry professors received special permission to perform COVID-19 research in labs on campus.

    McDaniel selects new class of Global Fellows

    McDaniel College selects 15 freshmen into the Global Fellows program. The Global Fellows program is a three-year program that is open to freshmen and is designed to enhance their understanding of global issues, develop heightened intercultural competency and cultivate the skills and attitudes important to leading successful lives in a global context.

    Works by graduating Art students highlighted in two virtual senior capstone exhibitions

    Nine McDaniel seniors are featured in two virtual senior capstone exhibitions, titled “Perspective, Perceptions, and the Self: Private Lives in a Public World” and “Something Bigger.” Both include a range of media from two- and three-dimensional approaches to digital and new media.

    Faculty ingenuity fuels McDaniel’s shift to online classes to weather the pandemic

    McDaniel professors and instructional design staff pivot, using innovation and creativity, to transform classes, labs and studios for students to attend classes on a virtual Hill. Ingenuity abounds as students search homes and backyards for organic chemicals, act out scenes in plays on split screens, sample French culture by making crêpes and watch their seedlings grow in the college greenhouse via videos sent by their Sustainable Agriculture professor.

    The Forest Online course turns McDaniel students into great storytellers

    The Forest Online course at McDaniel College is not only about researching wildlife, forest protection, ecotourism and community in the Peruvian Amazon but also has the purpose to teach students to become great storytellers and turn what they have learned into high-impact stories. The three-part course is taught in the fall semester, during McDaniel’s January Term and in the spring semester.

    Senior Spanish and Political Science major named Fulbright finalist

    Ravi Patel, a senior at McDaniel College, has been named a Fulbright finalist for an English Teaching Assistant Award in Indonesia. Patel is a double major in Spanish and Political Science with a specialization in International Studies. He has traveled to 27 countries around the world, but there’s one place he has not reached yet.
