    Each summer, graduate students in McDaniel’s Reading Specialist: Literacy Leadership program are involved with the McDaniel College Reading Clinic, a comprehensive four-week experience providing reading and writing assistance to elementary school-aged students enrolled in Carroll County Public Schools (CCPS).

    Two former Writing for Children and Young Adults graduate students find success in the publishing world

    Two former students in McDaniel’s Writing for Children and Young Adults (WCYA) graduate certificate program have found success in the publishing world. B. Sharise Moore, who specialized in WCYA while pursuing her master’s degree from McDaniel’s Innovations in Teaching and Learning (formerly Curriculum and Instruction) graduate program, had a debut fantasy novel, “Dr. Marvellus Djinn’s Odd Scholars,” released at the end of May. Jared Reck, who completed coursework in WCYA and currently teaches as an online adjunct lecturer in the program, has had “Donuts and Other Proclamations of Love” published with Knopf Books for Young Readers by Penguin Random House.

    McDaniel College Board of Trustees elects two new members

    McDaniel College has named two new members to its board of trustees. Jill Kortvelesy Mennicken of Laurel, N.Y., a 1981 alumna of the college, served as senior director of business development at Forrest Solutions, a Manhattan-based staffing and outsourcing company. Aaron Slaughter of Silver Spring, Md., a 2010 alumnus of the college, is a senior manager at Withum, a national top-ranking public accounting firm.

    Common Ground on the Hill’s “Traditions Weeks” kicks off on Monday, June 28 with virtual opportunities to learn about other cultures. McDaniel College has offered classes, concerts, dances, and galleries on campus as part of Common Ground on the Hill’s “Traditions Weeks” since 1995.

    Rising junior awarded national study abroad scholarship

    McDaniel College rising junior John Mendenhall is looking forward to having a deeper understanding of Middle Eastern culture after being awarded a national study abroad scholarship. Mendenhall of Bethesda, Md., has been awarded a James G. Stemler Study Abroad Scholarship from Alpha Lambda Delta.

    McDaniel mourns loss of longtime women’s basketball coach Becky Martin

    Becky Martin, a 1980 alumna of McDaniel College and for nearly four decades coach of the Green Terror women's basketball team, died Tuesday, June 8 after a long illness. She was 62. A stand-out student athlete in both volleyball and basketball, Becky took over the reins of the women's basketball program in 1981, just a year after graduating from the college, and was a staple on the Green Terror sidelines for 37 seasons prior to her medical leave in 2018. With her career 554-369 record, she is the winningest coach in Centennial Conference history.

    McDaniel participates in MICUA consortium to support transfer students’ pathways to colleges

    McDaniel College is participating in the Maryland Independent College and University Association (MICUA) consortium to help more community college students in Maryland achieve their goal of earning a degree from a four-year college. MICUA has been awarded a $50,000 initial grant by the Teagle Foundation to support transfer students’ pathways to colleges. MICUA and its member institutions, which includes McDaniel, will work with Maryland’s 16 community colleges to create a comprehensive transfer consortium.

    Juniors, sophomores, and first-year students honored with academic and leadership awards

    Nearly 30 juniors, sophomores, and first-year students have earned awards for academic achievement and leadership from McDaniel College. Students were also named to two prestigious leadership honor societies, Omicron Delta Kappa and Trumpeters.

    McDaniel College announces Spring 2021 dean's list

    McDaniel College announces its Spring 2021 dean's list, recognizing full-time undergraduate students for outstanding academic achievement. Highest honors are earned for a semester grade point average of 3.90 or higher, high honors for a grade point average of 3.70-3.89, and honors for a 3.50-3.69 grade point average.

    McDaniel College welcomes 10th President, Dr. Julia Jasken

    Dr. Julia Jasken becomes McDaniel College’s 10th president on June 1, 2021. She has dedicated nearly her entire professional life to higher education and most notably to McDaniel, beginning in the classroom in 2003 as an English professor. Dr. Jasken has served in various administrative roles at the college, most recently as executive vice president and provost, overseeing academic and student life.
