Carol Morelock Patterson '66 receives Green Terror Sports Hall of Fame Award

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Carol Morelock Patterson of Port Hope, Ontario, is a recipient of the Green Terror Sports Hall of Fame award from McDaniel College. She is a 1966 alumna of the college.
Presented annually during McDaniel’s Homecoming, the Green Terror Sports Hall of Fame award is presented to a graduate and former athlete who has performed outstandingly as an undergraduate athlete and who has contributed to society since leaving the college.
Patterson, who majored in physical education at McDaniel (formerly Western Maryland) College, was a member of the field hockey and volleyball intramural teams. She was also elected president of the Women’s Athletic Association her senior year.
Because female sports teams were limited when she was a student at the college, she was unable to play women’s lacrosse. Instead, she was asked to teach the physical education majors’ lacrosse skills and fundamentals.
Since graduating in 1966, Patterson has devoted her career to teaching, coaching, refereeing and administration. She has coached lacrosse in Baltimore County, Md., and New York, including at SUNY Buffalo, where she earned a master’s degree in education, as well as Niagara University, where she worked as an assistant professor in physical education.
She served on the board of directors for the Iroquois Nationals, which represents the Iroquois Confederacy and is the only Native American team authorized to play a sport internationally. She and her late husband, John Wesley Patterson, were also involved with the Tuskewe Krafts, a wooden lacrosse stick manufacturer on the Tuscarora Indian Reservation.
In addition, Patterson helped organize and coach the National Canadian Women’s Lacrosse team. She was inducted into the Western New York Lacrosse Hall of Fame, earned the Canadian Lacrosse Association Certificate of Merit for over 25 years of service and the International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Association Recognition Award for outstanding contribution to the development of women’s lacrosse.
