Class of 2022 takes first steps on the Hill

From 22 states and 12 nations, the Class of 2022 moved in and took their first steps on the Hill.

Among the 475 freshmen and transfer students, 40 percent are multicultural and 27 percent are first-generation college students. They are athletes, class presidents, honors students and community volunteers.

Their first days were steeped in McDaniel traditions. They rang the Old Main bell and walked through the arch, holding candles to symbolize their first steps “out of darkness into the light” as members of the 151-year-old McDaniel community.

Still, this class also broke ground with at least one new tradition, a “Westminster Welcome” walk down Main Street to meet Mayor Joe Dominick, community partners such as the Boys and Girls Club of Westminster and see local businesses.

By the time classes began on Aug. 27, both new and returning students were one — together and climbing ever higher on the Hill.
