College recognized during Charter Day celebration at Maryland State House
On March 30 at the Annapolis State House where it all began, McDaniel College celebrated the 150th anniversary of the signing of its charter by then Gov. Thomas Swann.
The Maryland Senate and House of Representatives recognized the College from the floors of both houses in session while representatives on behalf of Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, Attorney General Brian Frosh and Comptroller Peter Franchot all brought citations and certificates of achievement honoring McDaniel.
The College honored one of its own, Senator Ed Kasemeyer ’67, with a citation on the occasion of his retirement after nearly three decades of service in the state legislature. Jim Lightner, College historian, trustee, professor emeritus and alumnus, discussed College history, referencing “Fearless and Bold,” the McDaniel/Western Maryland College history he authored and the “150 Years on the Hill” anniversary exhibit on display Jan. 10–March 30 in the Senate Office Building in Annapolis.
Despite two evacuations and a change in room and building due to a gas leak, the celebratory reception hosted by Sen. Justin Ready before session found students, faculty, alumni and staff with state officials cheering McDaniel on to another 150 years on the Hill.
