Glenn Caldwell, Ph.D.

Professor of Music at McDaniel College

• Fanfare, titled “E Tenebris in Lucem Voco (I call you out of darkness into light),” commissioned by McDaniel College in celebration of the college’s 150th anniversary (sesquicentennial)

Music theorist, composer and arranger, Glenn Caldwell is a seasoned musician in the genres of classical, jazz, and gospel.

A professor of Music at McDaniel since 1991, Caldwell teaches music theory-related courses while continuing his academic pursuits through scholarly research, conference presentations and lecturing on topics in the areas of music theory and composition in addition to his work as a composer and arranger

Caldwell was hired to arrange several songs for Stevie Wonder’s Natural Wonder tour. One of these arrangements, “Love’s In Need,” appears on Stevie Wonder’s recording of the same name that features Wonder with the Tokyo Philharmonic. Caldwell has also created several arrangements for various concerts around the United States — one for the Lionel Hampton Band with featured vocalist Chaka Khan.

Over the years, Caldwell has created over 100 gospel arrangements for full-orchestra and a significant number of compositions and arrangements for various ensembles in different musical styles. He arranged and orchestrated songs for a concert that was billed “GospoCentric Goes Classical,” featuring Dorinda Clark-Cole, Byron Cage and the music of Tramaine Hawkins. He was contracted by The Artist Company International to serve as creative director for its trademarked live event called “Gospel Goes Classical.”

His work with The Artist Company as arranger and conductor has produced many concerts featuring artists Anthony Brown and Group Therapy, Richard Smallwood and numerous others. Featured orchestras for these events include the Dallas Symphony, Atlanta Symphony and the Alabama Symphony to name a few.

Most recently, he arranged music and conducted three “Gospel Goes Classical” concerts in Johannesburg, South Africa, in three consecutive years, 2014-2016. The 2016 concert resulted in a DVD project that features U.S. artists Donnie McClurkin  with Joe Mettle from West Africa and South African artists Mahalia Buchanan, Ntokozo Mbambo Mbatha and The Tshwane Gospel Choir, all performing with the Johannesburg Music Initiative Orchestra. Next month, Caldwell, once again, will be conducting his arrangements in a “Gospel Goes Classical” concert in Orlando, Fla. The featured vocalists for this performance are the internationally known classical mezzo soprano Denyce Graves and multi-Grammy-winning gospel artist BeBe Winans.

A native of Clover, S.C., Caldwell received his B.S. in Music from North Carolina A&T State University, his Ed.M. degree from Rutgers University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.
