McDaniel alumni, students, families, and community members came together to celebrate Homecoming 2023 and the Green Terror’s 100th birthday.
McDaniel alumni, students, families, and community members came together to celebrate Homecoming 2023 and the Green Terror’s 100th birthday.
Before the game on Saturday, Sept. 30, alumni were welcomed back at the Decades Tent at Kenneth R. Gill Stadium and had the chance to network with other alumni and current McDaniel students at a brunch sponsored by the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee of the Alumni Council. The Student Alumni Council honored the tradition of reading the names of alumni who have passed during the Memorial Bell Ringing Ceremony.
Pre-game activities at Kenneth R. Gill Stadium kicked off with the presentation of the Homecoming Court by President Julia Jasken. First-Year Eminence was Melissa Deedy of Brookeville, Maryland; Sophomore Majesties were Varia Alston, Business Administration major from Baltimore, and Kenneth Moore, Health Sciences major from Laurel, Maryland; Junior Royalty was Kelly Ross, Criminal Justice major from Clinton, Maryland; and Senior Sovereign were Destiny Haley, Biology major from Parkville, Maryland, and Yeseniah Ortiz, Kinesiology major from Glassboro, New Jersey.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was presented with the James Brant Memorial Cup for excelling in academics, varsity sports, leadership, and community service. Alpha Sigma Tau won the prize for the best Letters on the Hill.
Homecoming would not have been complete without experiencing McDaniel's one-of-a-kind tailgating tradition during the football game against Gettysburg (Football Rally Falls Short in Homecoming Loss to Gettysburg) and showing some love to the Green Terror in honor of its 100th birthday, complete with cupcakes and singing of “Happy Birthday” at halftime. The Green Terror first made its appearance in the October 15, 1923, edition of Western Maryland monthly in an article that recounted a WMC football game where the 11 players on the field were referred to as "green terrors." Some say that then-Coach D.K. Shroyer coined the term "Terror" to boost the morale of his players after a loss. Others claim that a reporter described the team as "terrors" after a victory.
Other home athletic contests on Saturday included women's soccer and men’s soccer, who both played Franklin & Marshall
(Women's Soccer Blanks Diplomats on Homecoming and Men's Soccer Gives Valiant Effort in Loss to No. 25 Diplomats).
Field hockey played Ursinus on Friday, Sept. 29 (Field Hockey Edged by No. 15 Ursinus on Homecoming).
The McDaniel College Athletics Hall of Fame Awards Celebration was also held Sept. 29, which honors alumni athletes who personify the college’s tradition of excellence.
Congratulations to this year's honorees!
