Juried undergraduate exhibition showcases students’ best artwork

Best of Show: Kate Cramer for "Kitchen Overgrowth," 2022

UPDATE: Awards were selected for the Kathryn E. Wentz Juried Undergraduate Exhibition during the opening reception on Thursday, March 23.

The annual Kathryn E. Wentz Juried Undergraduate Exhibition highlights the best artwork by undergraduate students at McDaniel College. The exhibition runs from Monday, March 20-Friday, April 7 in Esther Prangley Rice Gallery, Peterson Hall. The opening reception takes place Thursday, March 23, 5:30-7:30 p.m., with a gallery talk at 6 p.m.

All students in the College’s department of Art are invited to submit up to five pieces of art that they have done while studying at McDaniel for inclusion in the exhibition.

Nine award winners are chosen for first, second, and third places, as well as four honorable mentions. Also awarded are Best in Show and a Foundations Award. The awards were announced during the opening reception on Thursday, March 23.

The juror for the exhibition is Sean Sauer, a representational painter whose work focuses on interior spaces and the landscape. Sauer’s work has been featured in numerous gallery exhibitions throughout the United States, including Prince Street Gallery, Gross McCleaf Gallery, and the Butchershop Gallery. He is represented by the Cerulean Gallery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Sauer received a B.F.A. in Painting from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an M.F.A. in Painting from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

He is currently an assistant professor at the Community College of Philadelphia, where he teaches all levels of drawing, design, and painting and serves as the transfer coordinator for the Art department.  

The exhibition and reception are both free and open to the public. Esther Prangley Rice Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m., and Saturday, noon–5 p.m. Call 410-857-2595 for more information.
