McDaniel, Carroll Community College sign transfer agreement benefiting Education students
Officials from Carroll Community College (Carroll) and McDaniel College signed a new articulation agreement making it easier for Carroll students to transfer and complete their bachelor’s degrees in Elementary Education or the Secondary Education/PreK-12 Education minor from McDaniel.
This agreement serves as a seamless pathway for students to earn both an associate’s degree from Carroll and a bachelor’s degree from McDaniel who plan to become teachers or administrators in a PreK-12 setting.
Carroll Community College President James D. Ball and McDaniel College President Roger N. Casey along with Rosalie Mince, vice president for Academic and Student Affairs at Carroll, and Julia Jasken, Provost at McDaniel, signed the Memorandum of Understanding, March 13, during a ceremony held at Carroll.
“McDaniel has a proud legacy of successfully training teachers and administrators, particularly in Carroll County,” said President Casey. “Our longstanding partnership with Carroll County Public Schools provides our students with access to schools within the county to gain hands-on experience in the classroom early and often. Because of this, many of our students stay and work within Carroll County. It is only fitting that we further solidify our relationship with Carroll Community College as a way to further invest in homegrown teachers who know and understand the needs in our community.”
The agreement, which goes into effect for the Fall 2019 semester at McDaniel, allows Carroll students with at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and who have completed the requirements for an Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) in Elementary Education/Elementary Special Education to receive guaranteed admission to McDaniel. Students are also eligible to receive at least a $16,000 per year transfer scholarship with additional scholarship consideration for members of the Phi Theta Kappa academic honor society.
Students can then choose to major in Elementary Education at McDaniel or enroll in the Secondary Education (grades 7–12) minor with a major in their field, such as Biology, Chemistry, English, Mathematics, Physics, Social Studies or Spanish, or the PreK-12 education minor in Art or Physical Education. Carroll students will be able to complete their degree at McDaniel in two years.
This is only the second agreement established by the two colleges. Carroll and McDaniel also have an articulation agreement signed for students in the Exercise Science pathway at Carroll to earn a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology at McDaniel. Kinesiology is one of the largest majors at McDaniel, and McDaniel is the only independent college or university in Maryland to offer a major in kinesiology.
“We are delighted at the opportunity this articulation agreement creates for our students at such a prominent institution as McDaniel College,” said President Ball. “Carroll students perform very well at other transfer institutions, and I am confident they will perform with distinction at McDaniel. We value our strong partnership with McDaniel and look forward to deepening that relationship in the near future and beyond.”
