McDaniel students met with elected officials during "Independent Higher Education Day"

A group of seven students from McDaniel College traveled to Annapolis, Maryland, on Tuesday, Feb. 18, for "Independent Higher Education Day," along with President Julia Jasken, Associate Vice President for Administration and Government Relations Jenni Glennon, and Social Work Professor Jim Kunz.

A group of seven McDaniel College students traveled to Annapolis, Maryland, on Tuesday, Feb. 18, for "Independent Higher Education Day," which was proclaimed by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and announced on the floors of the Senate and House by Sen. Shelly Hettleman (Baltimore County) and Del. Stephanie Smith (Baltimore City).

Accompanied by McDaniel College President Julia Jasken, Associate Vice President for Administration and Government Relations Jenni Glennon, and Social Work Professor Jim Kunz, the McDaniel students from Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Frederick, Montgomery, Prince George’s, and Worcester counties, participated in presentations and visited with their elected officials.

This annual event, organized by the Maryland Independent College and University Association (MICUA), highlights the partnership between Maryland's independent institutions and the State of Maryland. This includes the Sellinger Program, which provides state funding, specifically in the form of financial aid, to independent, nonprofit colleges and universities in Maryland, including McDaniel.

According to MICUA, “This day acknowledged the State’s independent institutions for their contributions to workforce development, scientific discoveries, global competitiveness, civic participation, and service to the community.”

  • Danielle Carter, senior Political Science major and Theatre Arts major from Rockville, Maryland
  • Anaisha Coates, senior Social Work major from Severn, Maryland
  • Jordan Grant, senior Social Work major from Baltimore, Maryland
  • Nicki James, junior Social Work major from Westminster, Maryland
  • Olivia Shores, senior Political Science major from Frederick, Maryland  
  • Leah Somerville, junior Political Science major from Clinton, Maryland
