McDaniel students win awards while participating in immersive, real-world learning experiences
During the Spring 2022 semester, six students participated in the Maryland Student Legislature annual session in Annapolis, Maryland, and 19 students attended the National Model United Nations in New York City. Additionally, 13 students were newly named National Security Fellows.
During the Spring 2022 semester, six students accompanied by Political Science professor Matthew Mongiello and Social Work professor Jim Kunz took home three awards from the Maryland Student Legislature annual session, while Political Science professor Francis Grice and 19 students attended the National Model United Nations in New York City, where the team won two awards. Additionally, 13 students were newly named National Security Fellows.
Maryland Student Legislature
A group of six McDaniel students received awards at the Maryland Student Legislature annual session held April 30-May 1 at the Maryland State House in Annapolis, Maryland. Political Science professor Matthew Mongiello and Social Work professor Jim Kunz accompanied the students.
Senior Social Work majors Sarah Bilger of Baltimore and Mackenzie Ashby of Middleburg, Virginia, earned “Most Outstanding Resolution” for R022-2122, A Resolution Concerning Crisis Intervention Team Training and The Thomas V. Mike Miller for Up and Coming New Members was presented to Gabrielle Gladden, a junior Biology and Political Science major from Baltimore.
The delegation, which also included Emily Camizzi, senior Social Work major from Tenafly, New Jersey, Kathleen Campbell, junior Business Administration major from Easton, Maryland, and Alina Philip, senior Political Science and French major from Germantown, Maryland, was also recognized with the “Most Outstanding Delegation” award along with UMBC.
National Model United Nations
Francis Grice, associate professor in the Political Science and International Studies department, took 19 students to the National Model United Nations (NMUN) 2022 conference April 3-7 in New York City, where they represented the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. The NMUN’s mission is to advance the understanding of the United Nations and contemporary international issues.
Senior Madelaine Lee, Political Science major from Westminster, South Carolina, served as the head delegate of McDaniel’s team, which received an honorable mention delegation award, placing them in the top 20 percent of delegations at the conference.
Jahan Hosseini, a first-year student from Gaithersburg, Maryland, also earned a position paper award for his paper submitted prior to the conference that “illustrated his knowledge of the agenda topics at hand,” according to the NMUN.

National Security Fellows
Selected students noted below were chosen as new National Security Fellows during the Spring 2022 semester.
McDaniel’s National Security Fellows Program pairs with any program of study to provide McDaniel students with robust knowledge, skills, and experience in national security as well as the ability to specialize in an area of interest, such as interstate conflict, intra-state political violence, cybersecurity, ethics, and human rights.
