Seniors win awards at annual History honor society conference

Seniors were invited by McDaniel History faculty members to present shortened versions of their senior history colloquium papers at the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference held Saturday, March 25 at Washington College.

First place winner, Christopher Quinn of South Orange, New Jersey

Seniors were invited by McDaniel History faculty members to present shortened versions of their senior history colloquium papers at the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference held Saturday, March 25 at Washington College. 

The following students won awards at the conference: 

  • Christopher Quinn, History major from South Orange, New Jersey won first place in U.S. history with his paper, “The Devil's Snowglobe: The American Invasion of Quebec Province, 1775.” 

  • Stephanie Eckard, History major from Westminster, Maryland won second place with her paper, "The Deathless Devotion of Southern Women: How the United Daughters of the Confederacy Weaponized Monuments in the Battle for Southern Memory."                                                                                                        

The following students also presented at the conference:             

  • David Bradley, History major from Union Bridge, Maryland  

  • Nicholas Dixon, History major from Millersville, Maryland  

  • Kyra Greenfield, History major from Beltsville, Maryland  

  • Scott Seburn, History major from Greencastle, Pennsylvania

The mission of the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor society is "to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, teaching, publication, and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians." Jakub Zejmis, senior lecturer in the history department at McDaniel, is the advisor.  

To be eligible for the honor society, students at McDaniel must be nominated and selected by faculty of the history department, as well as complete a minimum of four courses in history, achieve a minimum overall GPA of 3.0, achieve a minimum GPA of 3.1 in history courses taken at McDaniel, and must be in the top 35 percent of their class.
