Six ROTC cadets commissioned as Army officers

Six McDaniel graduating seniors, who served as members of the Green Terror Battalion, received commissions as Army officers on May 17. The keynote speaker for the ceremony was Brig. Gen. Matthew N. Gebhard ’93, deputy commanding general for operations at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Warfare Center and School, Special Operations Center of Excellence in Fort Liberty, North Carolina.

Members of the Green Terror Battalion were commissioned as Army officers at 10 a.m. on May 17, in a ceremony in Baker Memorial Chapel. Cadets from Mount St. Mary’s University and Hood College were commissioned in separate ceremonies.

McDaniel President Julia Jasken shared opening remarks, thanking veterans in the audience, and congratulating the six new Army officers.

"To today's graduating cadets: You are leaving McDaniel College with not only a liberal arts education but also the skills, knowledge, and experience necessary for leadership, combined with an ability to embrace the world, which will take you far," Jasken said. "We have no doubt that you'll make an incredible impact on your communities, and I look forward to hearing all about it when you return to the Hill."

The keynote speaker for the ceremony was Brig. Gen. Matthew N. Gebhard ’93, deputy commanding general for operations at the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School, Special Operations Center of Excellence at Fort Liberty, North Carolina. Gebhard enlisted in the Army Reserves in 1988 and later commissioned on active duty in 1993. During a career in both active and reserve components, his prior duties have included both Infantry and Psychological Operations (PSYOP) company-grade assignments, Group Command, and service as an Army War College instructor.

Gebhard graduated with a bachelor’s degree in History from McDaniel and holds master’s degrees from Duquesne University and the Army War College. In addition, Gebhard completed post-graduate study in Supervision of Education and Curriculum Development at the University of Pittsburgh. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, and Ranger Tab.

Gebhard shared his memories of his own Commissioning ceremony when he was a cadet at McDaniel College, as well as the lessons he has learned in his 30-year Army career.

"McDaniel's diverse studies sets it apart from other schools, and those diverse studies will serve you and help the wider organization of the Army," Gebhard said. "It's not about what you know, but that you have a love of learning, which you get here at McDaniel and in the Army."

Elijah M. Hansbrough of Westminster, Maryland, was recognized with the Lieutenant General (R) Otto Guenther Leadership Award, which annually goes to the commissioning cadet who best exemplifies the character, morals, leadership, and lifelong dedication demonstrated by the late Otto Guenther, a 1963 alumnus and former chair of McDaniel’s Board of Trustees, both to the U.S. Army and to his alma mater.

Teresa Grace T. Djapa

Teresa Grace T. Djapa of Lanham, Maryland, is a 2.5-year scholarship recipient graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and Self-Designed French Studies. At McDaniel, she was the president of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and a member of Africa’s Legacy and Habitat for Humanity. She also served as a tutor for the French department and was a member of Phi Sigma Iota and the Green Terror Battalion Color Guard team. Djapa will serve as a transportation officer and will attend Transportation Basic Officer Leader Course at Fort Gregg-Adams, Virginia.

Elijah M. Hansbrough

Elijah M. Hansbrough of Westminster, Maryland, is a scholarship cadet graduating with a bachelor’s degree in History and Political ScienceInternational Studies. Hansbrough completed Advanced Camp at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He will go active duty, Field Artillery, and will attend Basic Officer Leader Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Jeovannie A. Martinez

Jeovannie A. Martinez of Silver Spring Maryland, is a non-scholarship cadet graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He was a Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) cadet and drilled with the 175th scouts/sniper company in Dundalk, Maryland. During his time as a member of the Green Terror Battalion, he completed Advanced Camp at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Martinez will serve as a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) officer and will attend CBRN Basic Officer Leader Course at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Kevin Logan Munford

Kevin Logan Munford of Laurel, Maryland, is a three-year advanced designee scholarship cadet graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. At McDaniel, he was a member of the math honor society, Kappa Mu Epsilon. In summer 2022, he graduated from Air Assault School at West Point. Munford completed Advanced Camp at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He will serve on active duty in the Signal Corps and will attend Basic Officer Leader Course at Fort Gordon, Georgia.

Tyren Proctor

Tyren Proctor of Brandywine, Maryland, is a four-year Green to Gold scholarship recipient graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Prior to the four-year Green to Gold scholarship, Proctor served as a specialist in the Army as a Blackhawk Crew Chief. Proctor has already served three years in the Army as an enlisted soldier and is now continuing his service as a commissioned officer in the Puerto Rico Reserves. During his time as a member of the Green Terror Battalion, he completed Advanced Camp at Fort Knox, Kentucky, earned his certified personal trainer license, and set over 15 school records and two conference records in his three years on the track team. Proctor will serve as a Signal Corps officer and will attend Signal Basic Officer Leader Course at Fort Gordon, Georgia.

Jacob M. Urbain

Jacob M. Urbain of Hanover, Pennsylvania, is a 2.5-year scholarship cadet graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Economics. At McDaniel, he was the recipient of the James B. Moore and the Barry A. Winkelman Memorial academic awards. Urbain completed Advanced Camp at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Cadet Troop Leader Training shadowing the 307th ESB-E at Helemano Military Reservation, Hawaii. He will serve as a medical service officer and will attend Basic Officer Leader Course at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
