Steve Ports '83 named McDaniel College Alumnus of the Year

McDANIEL COLLEGE NAMES STEVE PORTS ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR

Steve Ports of Severna Park, Md., is a 1983 alumnus of the college 

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel College has named Steve Ports of Severna Park, Md., Alumnus of the Year for 2017. 

A political science major, Ports has dedicated his career to shaping public policy for the common good, and has served in high-impact roles within the State of Maryland. He got his start working in the political arena through an internship his junior year with U.S. Senator Paul Tsongas of Massachusetts. After receiving his bachelor's degree from McDaniel in 1983, he earned a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Baltimore in 1985.

He worked as a committee staffer and budget/fiscal analyst with the Maryland General Assembly’s Department of Legislative Services, where he tackled complex issues like health care delivery and financing, as well as income and property tax reform. He then went on to serve as chief of staff and legislative assistant to President of the Maryland Senate Mike Miller. 

Most recently, he was the principal deputy director at the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission, where he led innovative efforts to improve care for patients and reduce costs. He is currently an independent health care policy consultant.

For more than three decades, Ports has also played bass in The Klassix, a band that specializes in high-energy rock, jazz, and pop music that has entertained at many of Maryland’s premier party events. 

He served for 15 years on the Alumni Council at McDaniel and received the college’s alumni college service award in 2008.
