- What’s your background? Where were you before McDaniel and when did you start here?
- Since graduating from McDaniel (then Western Maryland College), I’ve had an amazingly gratifying career as a global corporate executive and entrepreneur. I came to McDaniel’s Communication & Cinema department as an adjunct in 2013 after teaching at Notre Dame of Maryland in Baltimore. My classmate Jonathan Slade ’88 had asked me to fill in while another faculty member was on sabbatical. Fast forward, my former professor Dr. Ethan Seidel asked me to create a Digital Marketing course. I love creating content and explaining key concepts related to strategic communications and digital marketing.
- Why did you choose McDaniel as a place to work? What inspired you to become part of the Hill?
- I always dreamt of being a college professor in my retirement years, and I couldn’t ask for a better place to work than McDaniel. When I was a student, I was involved in athletics, Greek Life, student government, and academics. My mom graduated from McDaniel and growing up I was surrounded by her college friends and their children (many of whom were my classmates). There is something magical about the Hill that is hard to describe. I enjoyed my relationships with my professors, and they influenced who I am today as a global citizen.
- What have you enjoyed most during your time at McDaniel?
- The number one thing I have enjoyed most about McDaniel is the impact that I can have on students by sharing my knowledge, my network, and inspiring them to become the best version of themselves. I love that McDaniel staff have supported me in creating new courses like Social Impact Storytelling where we explore the intersection of storytelling and social justice to make meaningful change at McDaniel with all of its stakeholder groups.
- What do you hope students take away from your courses?
- My biggest hope is that students walk away from my courses with new knowledge, critical thinking skills, better writing habits, and a belief in themselves. As a hiring manager, I want students to be prepared for the workforce and ready to contribute in a meaningful way to the organizations that hire them. I emphasize the importance of self-responsibility, accountability, managing your time and energy, emotional intelligence, and why building relationships is so critical to future success.
