McDaniel College students perform in annual fall music concerts

Student African Drum Ensembles
The Student African Drum Ensembles perform Thursday, Nov. 21, at 7 p.m. in Roj Student Center's Naganna Forum.
The program features the traditional African songs “Kuku,” “Macaru,” "Mengani,” and “Lambaa," under the direction of Senior Adjunct Lecturer Pape Demba "Paco" Samb along with the Super Ngewel ensemble.

College Choir Concert
The McDaniel College Choir presents its fall concert on Sunday, Nov. 24, at 7 p.m. in Baker Memorial Chapel. The choir is under the direction of Senior Lecturer Kyle Engler.
The McDaniel College Choir performs works from a variety of countries by diverse composers, including “Dawn and Dusk” by Ken Steven; “Flight Song” by Kim André Arnessen; “Hands Are Knockin” by Kyle Pederson; “Choose Something Like a Star” from “Frostiana” by Randall Thompson; “Bright Morning Stars” (arrangement by Ruth Elaine Schram); “The Call” by Regina Spektor (arrangement by Dianne Gryba); “Good Trouble” by Thomas Keesecker; “All of Us” from “Considering Matthew Shepard” by Craig Hella Johnson; and “Hymn of Acxiom” by Vienna Teng.
The Green TerrorTones, the premier vocal ensemble at McDaniel, also performs “I Lived” by One Republic; “Lift Me Up” by Rihanna (arrangement by Emily Drum); “Moonlight In Vermont” (arrangement by Darmon Meader); “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder (arrangement by Paul Langford); “Because, “Eleanor Rigby,” and “In My Life” (arrangement by Roger Emerson) by The Beatles; “Leave the Door Open” by Bruno Mars (arrangement by Silv Pybus; “Halcyon Days” by Melissa Dunphy; and “Toxic” by Britney Spears (arrangement by Deke Sharon).

Jazz Night
Tim Jenkins, senior adjunct lecturer, directs Jazz Night on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m., in WMC Alumni Hall’s Mainstage Theatre. The concert features diverse styles of jazz, including classic big band swing, bebop, Latin, funk, jazz-rock, and classic blues.
The program includes "Love is here to stay" by George and Ira Gershwin; "How Insensitive" by Antonio Carlos Jobim (arrangement by Tim Jenkins); "Traces (Snow Song)" by Harrison Booth; "Soldier Poet King" by Maggie and Tyler Heath; "Japanese Denim" by Daniel Caesar (arrangement by Tim Jenkins); "Phthalo" by Tim Jenkins); "Please, Please, Please let me get what I want" by Johnny Marr and Morrisey; "Self-Portrait In Three Colors”" by Charles Mingus; "What a difference a day made" by Stanley Adams and Maria Greve (arrangement by Tim Jenkins); "C.T.A." by Jimmy Heath; and "Have yourself a merry Christmas" by Martin and Blane (arranged by Frank Devol).

College Band Concert
On Friday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. in WMC Alumni Hall's Mainstage Theatre, nearly 50 musicians, including McDaniel students, as well as McDaniel faculty members, alumni, and community musicians, perform during the College Band Concert. The College Band is directed by Senior Lecturer in Music Linda Kirkpatrick and performs musical selections by contemporary composers, including several holiday selections.
This semester’s program includes two selections in honor of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, “America Forever March” and music from the movie “Pearl Harbor.” “MANCINI!” will be performed to celebrate American composer Henry Mancini’s birth 100 years ago along with the “English Folk Song Suite,” also composed in 1924. Other selections include “Blue Shades,” “Snowflakes Dancing,” and “Nutcracker Fantasia.”

Westminster Symphony Orchestra Concert
The Westminster Symphony Orchestra Concert takes place Saturday, Dec. 7, at 3 p.m. in WMC Alumni Hall’s Mainstage Theatre. Directed by Linda Kirkpatrick, senior lecturer in Music, the Westminster Symphony Orchestra includes McDaniel and Carroll Community College students, as well as Music faculty and community musicians.
Highlights of the concert are the premiere of a new work, “Hours:24,” composed by Collin David, a member of the Westminster Symphony Orchestra’s cello section and “Symphony No. 3 in Eb major, Op. 55 (Eroica)” by Ludwig van Beethoven in honor of the symphony’s 220th anniversary.

Gospel Choir Concert
The Gospel Choir performs Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m. in WMC Alumni Hall's Mainstage Theatre. The Gospel Choir presents a combination of traditional and contemporary gospel music, under the direction of Senior Adjunct Lecturer Shelley Ensor. According to Ensor, this fall’s concert also includes “out-of-the-box music selections that promote love, peace, and joy!”
