Three incoming freshmen surprised with Dorsey Scholarships

McDaniel College’s Admissions Office along with the Green Terror surprised three incoming Class of 2025 students by announcing them as the college’s newest Dorsey Scholars. The Dorsey Scholars Program is the highest academic honor at McDaniel and includes full tuition, room, and board for all four years.

Three incoming freshmen were recently surprised with Dorsey Scholarships to McDaniel College.

McDaniel College’s Admissions Office along with the Green Terror surprised three incoming Class of 2025 students by announcing them as the college’s newest Dorsey Scholars.

The highest academic honor at McDaniel, students selected for the Dorsey Scholars Program receive full tuition, room, and board for all four years at the college. Students are chosen from the Honors applicant pool.

Dorsey Scholars are academic leaders and role models on campus. They also have distinctive opportunities, including serving as ambassadors of the college.

The Dorsey Scholars Program is supported by a $6.7 million estate gift from 1891 alumnus Philip Henry Dorsey, the largest bequest for scholarships in McDaniel’s history.

Diana Flores was surprised on Wednesday, March 24 at Winters Mill High School with a Dorsey Scholarship to McDaniel College.

Diana Flores, a senior at Winters Mill High School in Westminster, Md., is described as a committed, caring, hardworking, and compassionate student who is dedicated to both her academics and extracurriculars.

Flores is an executive board member for Falcons of Strength, the Sources of Strength chapter at Winters Mill High School. Falcons of Strength is an international program to prevent youth suicide, violence, bullying and substance abuse and Flores was recognized as the 2020 Student Champion of the Year by the Children’s Mental Health Matters! Campaign for her work using social media to connect with her peers to reach out and help them cope with issues like loneliness and anxiety during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her passion to shine a light on mental health issues led Flores to be featured on NBC's “TODAY” show. She is also involved with the Cultural Differences Unite Club at her high school.

Wesley Gant was surprised with a Dorsey Scholarship on Tuesday, March 16.

Wesley Gant, a senior at St. Elizabeth School in Wilmington, Del., has not only excelled academically, but he has also taken on many leadership and athletic roles. He serves as the student body president at St. Elizabeth School and is a member of the National Honor Society, as well as participates in the Delaware Youth Leadership Network and as a lawyer for the Mock Trial.

He is the goalkeeper and captain of the St. Elizabeth soccer team, winning second-team all-conference honors, and also plays ice hockey and baseball. He also has volunteered as an altar server and eucharistic minister at Corpus Christi Parish. Gant has cared for county police horses and worked with children at the Carousel equestrian center. He also was selected to participate in the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership program.

Sarah Youssef was surprised on Wednesday, March 17 with a Dorsey Scholarship.

Sarah Youssef, a senior at Gaithersburg High School in Gaithersburg, Md., is a highly involved student leader participating in the Student Government Association, Minority Scholars Program, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), Engineering club, and political organizations. She also plays soccer and lacrosse. 

She is passionate about increasing awareness of global social issues, which stems from her time living in Egypt and witnessing civil unrest there, and she has pushed her peers to widen their perspectives.
